With the growth of Australian women’s sport, more and more athletes are beginning to look ahead to their post-sport careers. The Minerva Network has been there to support, matching elite sportswomen with Australian businesswomen to help them maximise their opportunities on and off the field. SEC Newgate Australia has been pleased to extend its successful partnership with the game-changing not-for-profit organisation.
Since commencing in 2022, the partnership has helped to unlock the leadership potential of athletes while also supporting established businesswomen in their careers. More recently, it’s included a series of SEC Newgate ‘Headwinds and Tailwinds’ presentations, highlighting the challenges and opportunities facing Australian businesses in 2024.
Minerva Chairman and co-founder Christine McLoughlin AM said the presentations were well received by 50 Minerva mentors.

First launched in 2017, Minerva’s signature mentorship program has paired some of Australia’s most established business leaders with high-profile sports stars, preparing them for life after sport. Minerva currently supports almost 800 athletes from 75 sports, along with 330 mentors spanning a range of industries across Australia’s corporate, government and not-for-profit sectors.
SEC Newgate Australia Managing Partner Sue Vercoe is a Minerva Network mentor, along with colleagues Feyi Akindoyeni, Jennie Murray and Cecilia Hemana. Sue has worked with Sydney Swans AFLW athlete Aimee Whelan since 2022.
“Aimee and I have learned a lot from each other since we began working together two years ago,” she said. “It’s been a privilege for me to support her career development as a physio off the field, while she’s continued to apply herself on the field.
“Our partnership with Minerva has been a successful one, and we’ve been proud to support the growth of the network so far. More than 450 athletes have joined Minerva over the past two years, and I’m looking forward to seeing this grow further in future.”
The Minerva Network’s list of athletes currently includes the likes of Alyssa Healy, Cate Campbell, Madi de Rozario and Ellie Carpenter, while prominent business leaders Sam Mostyn AO, Dr Fiona Wood AO, Dr Sarah Kelly OAM and Kate Roffey AM are among those to provide valuable mentor support.
